The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) reported the death of 112 sea lions in the Antofagasta region as a result of bird flu.
Of the 112 cases, 55% correspond only to the month of March, while the remaining 45% were recorded since January 2023. Despite the more than 100 deaths, the agency indicated that only two sea lions have been analyzed.

The director of Sernapesca, René Salinas, indicated that “you have to assume that you are infected, this is not only because of the speed, but in this way we apply all the biosafety protocols associated with preventing someone from becoming infected.”
It should be noted that the species with the highest incidence of avian flu positivity corresponds to the pelican, with about 36 registered cases; It is followed by the booby bird with 21 and the red-headed jote with 16. As a result, the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) maintains sanitary control in ten areas of the Antofagasta region.
