The music of The Beatles enjoyed great acceptance among Cubans from early on, despite the official position, which considered them a symbol of capitalism. In the early 1960s his songs were not played on national radio and television.
However, his records passed from hand to hand, either brought from abroad by merchant sailors and officials or by the so-called “plates”, which were his LPs. shot by Cuban technicians. His melodies were also heard on the WQAM station in Miami.
But the official position gradually changed. In the year 2000, the statue of John Lennon was inaugurated in a park in Vedado, an act in which the then president Fidel Castro participated together with the singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez.
