The flow of Cuban rafters does not stop despite the new US immigration policy

Not even the announcement of the new “humanitarian permit” by the United States for Cubans, Nicaraguans, Haitians and Venezuelans stops the flow of rafters to Florida. This Tuesday, 44 compatriots from the Island disembarked, 22 of them, who managed to make landfall in Fort Lauderdale, escaped, public Telemundo 51.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department was alerted to the presence of a group of 25 Cubans in the Bay Area. According to a witness, only three of the group that arrived in a rustic boat could be taken into custody. Several officers made rounds to stop the other rafters but were unsuccessful.

This Tuesday, the Border Patrol also recorded the arrival at Playa Colonia Clave of another 19 Cubans in a rustic boat. The chief officer of the Miami sector, Walter Slosar, shared a video of the raft where clothes and a towel with the image of a $100 bill were left.

The rafters who manage to make landfall are being serving an expedited order of deportation, the verdict that a judge issues for expulsion of a person but that can be reversed with legal advice. This order has an expiration period of 60 days. Hence, many Cubans do not know if they will really be deported or will be able to opt for another solution.

This Wednesday, journalist Mario J. Pentón confirmed that the first Cubans who obtained permits began to travel, he commented in a video that he uploaded on his Facebook account.

Yalena Brito, mother of the beneficiary minor, informed Telemundo 51 by telephone from the Island that she received the travel permit on Tuesday: “It was such a great joy that it has no comparison with anything.” This Cuban was sponsored by her sister Yailén Arcos.

“We still don’t believe it. With thousands of jobs, connecting to a VPN we managed to do it,” Arcos told the local chain. “After submitting the application, in a few hours my niece was already approved, we are still waiting for my sister’s travel authorization.”

The director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, Kevin Guthrie, warned of an increase in surveillance by the Coast Guard, with the mission of locating the rustic boats and preventing their arrival in Florida. By land there are Border Patrol officers on various roads.

On Tuesday, Senator Marco Rubio and Congressman Carlos Giménez flew over Key West and were informed of the work being carried out by the Coast Guard to “detect and deter illegal maritime migration.”

In one of these actions, 12 migrants from Haiti (9), Brazil (2) and the Bahamas (1) were detained, who arrived in a speedboat in Fort Lauderdale. According to the Border Patrol, the event is being investigated as “maritime smuggling” so the people are under investigation.

Also this Tuesday, 187 rafters were repatriated to the island in the ships Angela McShan Y robert yered. Since last October 1, there are already 4,915 Cubans who have seen their attempt to reach Florida frustrated.
