The Chamber of Senators has decided to vote against the impeachment trial against Mayor Carolina Cosse, a proposal presented by the councilors of the opposition coalition at the departmental level. However, in an unexpected twist, Senator Jorge Gandini changed his position at the last moment and explained the reasons behind his decision.
At the beginning of his speech, Gandini emphasized that, in his opinion, Cosse had infringed the Constitution by not attending the calls of the Departmental Board. With solid legal grounds, the senator argued that the councilors reacted to Cosse’s attitudes and his actions contrary to established regulations.
During his speech, Gandini delved into the supposed legal aspects that supported his position. He stressed that the repeated absence of the mayor to the calls of the Departmental Board constituted a clear “violation” of the constitutional principles that govern the operation of government bodies.
Gandini changed his mind because of an advertisement
Although Gandini was going to vote with the rest of the legislators to reject impeachment, a particular event made him change his mind. “I came to the room today to say this and to say ‘I think the constitution was violated, but I am going to support what my colleagues have resolved in the Commission.’ But things happen as they are and a while ago an advertisement came to my cell phone that summons us to a press conference with the figure of the mayor of Montevideo, with a logo of the Broad Front, which reads ‘Archive of the Impeachment of Carolina Cosse’”, stated the right-wing legislator.
“My mood changed, do you know why? Because I am not going to vote for something that wants to be broadcast and interpreted as a political victory because that was not what it was about. But it is going to be broadcast, it has already been announced, summoned and I do not want them to use my vote to say ‘Mayor Carolina Cosse received the support of the entire parliament, unanimously, to archive something that is not going to be archived, no it is archived, it is incorrect, but it is understood. and i’m not going to”, he assured.
