Senate selects commission to evaluate JCE member candidates

SANTO DOMINGO.- Senate President Ricardo de los Santos announced on Tuesday the nine members who will make up the special commission that will be in charge of studying the files and interviewing the candidates to be part of the plenary session of the new Central Electoral Board for the period 2024-2028.

The commission will be chaired by Julito Fulcar, senator for Peravia; and will also include Antonio Taveras, vice president, and the senators Pedro Catrain, Ramón Rogelio Genao, María Mercedes Ortiz, Félix Bautista, Daniel Rivera, Franklin Romero and Aracelis Villanueva.

The Senate President said that senators interested in participating in the analysis of the curriculum and interviews of candidates to be members of the JCE plenary session will be able to do so with voice but without votes.

Law 589-16 on Food System and Safety approved

The Senate of the Republic approved and declared urgent the project that modifies Law 589-16, which creates the National System for Food and Nutritional Sovereignty and Security of the Dominican Republic.

The initiative submitted by the Executive Branch aims to modify articles 3, 5, 8, 10, 13, 17 and 21 of the Food Safety Law and adds articles 57, 58 and 59.

From now on, the law provides for special measures in Article 57, which empowers the President of the Republic to take special measures regarding sensitive products, in order to preserve the essential interests of the State in terms of security.

Likewise, in its article 58, the piece indicates special recommendations regarding sensitive products in productive, commercial, economic, labor, social or international terms, while article 59 establishes types of special measures for the application of the Tariff.

The Senate also declared the urgent need and approved the bill regulating Nautical and Recreational Tourism, submitted by Senators Alexis Victoria and Ginnette Bournigal.

The legislation seeks to promote nautical tourism by regulating navigation in vessels and nautical devices, which for recreational, private, commercial and sporting purposes are carried out in waters under national jurisdiction, and also includes aspects related to the registration, construction and repair of vessels.

Also, the resolution was approved that requests the general director of the Dominican Agrarian Institute (IAD), Francisco Guillermo García, to reconsider Resolution No. 6 of 2022, which modifies the organizational structure of that institution, so that the Bahoruco territorial division of the regional department of Enriquillo-Barahona, presented by former senator Melania Salvador, be created and included.

Omar Fernandez to the CNM

Senator Félix Bautista, from Fuerza del Pueblo, representative of the province of San Juan, citing numeral 3 of article 178 of the Constitution, and arguing that he has the second largest political majority in the Senate, presented Omar Fernández, senator of the National District to the plenary session, to be a representative to the National Council of the Judiciary.

Senate President Ricardo de los Santos accepted Senator Bautista’s motion and proceeded to submit Senator Fernández’s candidacy to the plenary session, which was approved by 28 of the 30 senators in the chamber.

Voting against were Ramón Rogelio Genao of the PRSC and Antonio Marte of the People First Party (PPG).

Minute of Silence

Before the start of the session, the senators observed a minute of silence and honored the memory of the victims of the accident that occurred in the community of Bastida, municipality of Las Yayas, province of Azua; and for Mr. Luis Romero, father of Senator Franklin Romero; as well as for the death of businessman Ramón Antonio Cruz (Turin), illustrious municipal official of the province of Espaillat.

The President of the Senate, at the end of the session, called the senators to work in the chamber next Wednesday, the 11th, at 2:00 p.m.
