SEMM Mautone calls to analyze quality and compliance challenges in health systems

The SEMM Mautone de Maldonado Sanatorium celebrates its 45th anniversary and in the context of a series of activities carried out to highlight this date, organizes the 3rd International Medical Seminar dedicated to the approach to Quality and Compliance in Health Systems, which will take place this Thursday 18 and Friday 19 at The Grand Hotel, Punta del Este.

The presentation of the activity was held on Wednesday 10 with a press conference given by the main authorities of the sanatorium. As announced, the seminar will bring together national authorities, such as the Undersecretary of Public Health, José Luis Satdjian, the General Director of Coordination of the MSP, Karina Rando, and departmental authorities, such as the mayor of Maldonado, Enrique Antía, and the director of Cheers, Neris García.

“It is a seminar that gives continuity to previous ones at an international level that we did, where different topics related to health were addressed. On the other hand, this is special because it is the 45th anniversary of the sanatorium ”, stated the technical director of SEMM Mautone, Gustavo Rodríguez.

In addition, the event brings together top-level medical specialists, such as Javier Carnicero (MD. PhD, Health Systems and Services Consultant in Spain), Luis Tejerina (Lead Specialist in the IDB’s Social Protection and Health Division), Daniel Luna (CIO Medical Informatics of the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires) and the main authorities of the SEMM Mautone Sanatorium.

Analysis and leading specialists

The conference will have different tables for analysis, such as a space dedicated to addressing the “Governance of Digital Health”, in which the degree of maturity in governance of the National Electronic Medical Record of our country will be discussed, and a round table on Human Resources training in Medical Informatics, in which the options available in Uruguay and the region will be discussed.

Meanwhile, other analysis tables are entitled: “What value does the Compliance Program add to Health companies”, “What is meant by Quality in Health Services”, and “Electronic Medical Record: effects on Quality and Patient safety”. All topics will be dealt with by a wide panel of specialists of various technical and scientific profiles.

Regarding the quality of health services, Rodríguez pointed out that this aspect should not remain a mere “statement”, but rather “something that is measurable and auditable by external organizations”.

“In this sense, we have been applying UNIT certifications, trying to have the entire sanatorium certified, a milestone that we are going to achieve next year. We started in 2012 and we were certifying different areas of the organization ”, deepened the technical director of the SEMM Mautone Sanatorium.

In turn, he made reference to compliance in health systems, one of the central themes of the seminar. “For now, in Uruguay, compliance is a private issue for banks, financial institutions and some multinational companies. But we believe that there is room to develop this type of health practice. We are going to put them on the table; we think that with our compliance policies we are being pioneers in the area of health, ”said Rodríguez.

Compliance refers to standards and manuals of good practices that aim to combat corruption and disseminate ethical behavior in the organization.

“In the region, some health companies are already implementing it, for example in Argentina, incorporating specific compliance policies,” Rodríguez continued. For this reason, there will be references from that country in the seminar this Thursday and Friday.

The other central theme of the conferences will be digital health, which became evident during the Covid-19 pandemic due to the reduction in presence and the different activities carried out by a health center. “We want to debate where the country is going in this advancement of governance in digital health. It is important for us to know it first-hand and to be at the forefront of the issue, ”said Rodríguez.

For this round table, there will be the presence of a Spanish consultant and a representative of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the same ones who came to Uruguay in 2019 to observe, among other things, the state of health governance digital.

The activity is sponsored by the Ministry of Public Health, the State Health Services Administration (ASSE), the Municipality of Maldonado, the National Quality Institute, UNIT, UCU, UDE, IEEM, ORT and the Rueda study, Abadi, Pereira. In addition, they support SEMM, MP Medicina Personalizada, Cosem, Universal Soluciones Tecnológicas, LAC, Terapfis and Cardiomóvil.
