Plastic artist and ceramic artist Cristian Tiburcio defended his participation as co-author in the design and construction of the Monument to the Heroes of May 30, 32 years ago, on George Washington Avenue, in the capital.
The sculptor, president of the Cristian Tiburcio Foundation, stated that the late plastic artist Silvano Lora is the author of the visual sketch of the work, but that it was up to him to interpret and make that idea a reality.
“There has never been a controversy about that,” Tiburcio said about the authorship of the work.
Quisque Lora Hugi, director of the Silvano Lora Foundation, argues that the authorship of that monument corresponds exclusively to his father.
The work was built in 1992 to honor the executioners of the tyrant Rafael Leonidas Trujillo on May 30, 1961.
“The artist Silvano Lora is the author of the visual sketch of the work, about which there has never been any controversy,” Tiburcio said in a press release.
“Consequently, there are two authors here with rights defined by law,” he said.
Tiburcio specified that for the execution of said monumental sculptural work, the painter Silvano Lora asked the master Candido Bidó for advice.

He stated that Bidó advised Lora that its construction be made of ceramic, as it is a material that is resistant to saltpeter, wind and sun.
He indicated that, as a ceramic artist, he was recommended to execute the monument based on Lora’s sketch.
That is the reason why it has been up to him to restore the work on the two occasions ordered by the National Congress, without this fact causing any controversy, he explained.
They want to leave it out
Tiburcio said that now that the National District City Council ordered the restoration of the monument, the Silvano Lora Foundation wants another person to be appointed for that task.
“On the occasion of a restoration proposal for the conservation of the monument, part of the cultural heritage of the Dominican Republic, a useless controversy has been raised about the rights of the performing artist,” said the potter Tiburcio.
He stated that he will appeal to Law 65-00 on copyright and intellectual property to defend the co-authorship of the Monument to the Heroes of May 30.
The plastic artist cited that article 9 states that in divisible collaborative works, each collaborator is the owner of the rights over the part of which he is the author, which he can exploit separately, unless otherwise agreed.
