It is the first time that competitors from this country win this category in a Winter Olympics. The last gold in these events was achieved by Soviet skiers in 1980 in Lake Placid, United States.

The Russians Yulia Stupak, Natalia Nepriáyeva, Tatiana Sórina and Veronika Stepánova won the highest medal in the 4 × 5 kilometer relay the day before.

Russian skiers and skiers last won relays at the same Olympics in 1972, the TASS news agency recalled.

Also this Sunday the short track skater Konstantin Ivliev, from this country, won the silver of the Olympics in the 500 meters, surpassed by the Hungarian representative Shaoan Liu, while the top three was closed by the Canadian Stephen Dubois.

Another Russian with a medal this day was Eduard Latípov, who won the bronze in the biathlon competition.

The Russian delegation is in seventh place in the Olympic Games medal ranking with four gold, five silver and seven bronze, for a total of 16 medals.

The team of the Eurasian nation cannot compete with its national symbols (name of the country, the flag, or the anthem) in this Olympiad as it could not in Tokyo, Japan, last year.

The measures are part of the sanctions of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS), after a strong doping scandal that excluded the country for two years (from December 2020) from major sporting events.
