Roenis Elias, one of the Major League Baseball (MLB) players who joined the Cuban team for the V World Baseball Classic (WBC)will continue his actions this season in the South Korean Professional League (KBO), after signing a contract with the SSG Lander club.
The Guantanamo left-hander, who has ventured into top-level American baseball since 2014, joins Guillermo Heredia, also a Cuban, in the ranks of his new club.
Elías will receive an annual salary of less than a million dollars, in accordance with the specialized site Full Swingbased on the news announced by the journalist Francys Romero.
The outlet cites a publication by SSG Landers News on Twitter, according to which the Cuban pitcher signed a contract for $540,000 to replace Enni Romero, also a left-handed Dominican.
After the World Classic ended, the 34-year-old joined the Chicago Cubs organization, but since then he has only pitched at the Triple AAA level with the Iowa team, the publication adds.
Until leaving the Windy City franchise, the Cuban pitcher had four starts with a 2-0 record and a 5.48 ERA. In total, he pitched 21.1 innings, allowed 16 hits (6 HRs), struck out 18 opponents and posted an excellent 0.984 WHIP.
In his 10-year career in the Minor Leagues, Elías has a 46-39 record and a 4.34 earned run average. While in seven MLB seasons he has a 22-24 record with a 3.96 ERA.
Since his arrival at the highest level, the experienced pitcher has pitched for various MLB teams: Seattle Mariners (2014 -2015), Boston Red Sox (2016-2017), Seattle Mariners (2018-2019), Washington Nationals (2019) and a once again Seattle Mariners in 2022.
