Rodríguez argues “economic recovery” due to higher tax collection

Seniat data indicate that during these first four months of the year, Bs 5,458 million ($1,229 million) were collected, which represents an increase of 353% compared to last year’s collection, which totaled Bs 1,203,937,418 (approximately $447,755,127). ), Rodriguez reported.

In a balance on the results of Holy Week in economic matters, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez revealed some data related to the context of the Venezuelan economy and used them to feed the narrative that Venezuela is going through a recovery process.

At the end of the first fortnight of April, the National Integrated Customs and Tax Administration Service (Seniat) had already prepared its cut for the first quarter of the year, with the data on the tax collection generated thanks to the Income Tax (ISLR) which was declared until March 30.

In this sense, the Seniat data indicate that during these first four months of the year Bs 5,458 million ($1,229 million) were collected, which represents an increase of 353% compared to last year’s collection, which totaled Bs 1,203,937,418 ( approximately $447,755,127).

The official said that this improvement is unequivocal proof that Venezuela is on an economic growth path. However, it is important to keep in mind that the first quarter of 2021 was reduced by covid-19 and quarantine. Most of the year was spent with the 7+7 scheme, which was barely withdrawn in November.

This explains a higher economic activity in 2022 and therefore a more prominent tax collection, despite the fact that the numbers indicate that there was indeed a slight rebound in the economy by the end of 2021.

Rodríguez also revealed that for this quarter there was an increase of 28,000 new legal entities that declared and paid the Income Tax.

At first glance it might seem that there are more companies, but it is also related to the return to activities of companies that closed due to the pandemic and probably has to do with the emphasis that Chavismo put on paying ISLR this year, with serious threats inspection.

Holy Week “successful”, according to Rodríguez

Similarly, the vice president highlighted the supposed success of Holy Week, which showed a busier economic activity than usual, especially when compared to the last two years marked by covid-19.

Data from the Ministry of Tourism indicate that during the week 2.5 million vacationers were mobilized in the country and that hotel occupancy was, on average, 50%, despite the fact that in some states it exceeded 90%.

“The perception of having an economic improvement gave rise to Venezuelans moving to different tourist areas. Miranda, Vargas, Falcón, Anzoátegui, Nueva Esparta, Carabobo and Aragua had an excellent occupation”, explained Minister Ali Padrón.

Rodríguez, for her part, is convinced that the greater mobilization in the major week was due to the fact that Venezuelans perceive a better economic condition in the country and hope that 2022 will be even better.
