The state of Rio de Janeiro has seen an increase in the number of people eligible to vote, and in the next municipal election there will be 13,033,929 voters. According to the Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ), the total is equivalent to a 4.64% increase in the Rio de Janeiro electorate, compared to the last municipal election, in 2020.
In this year’s elections, voters will cast their ballots to choose mayors, deputy mayors and councilors in the country’s 5,568 municipalities.
According to the TRE-RJ, due to this increase in the electorate, 11 cities in the state will be able to hold a second round, one more than in the last municipal election. The city of Magé, in Baixada Fluminense, entered the list after reaching 201,611 people eligible to vote on October 6 and in the second round scheduled for October 27.
In order to have a second round, the city must have more than 200 thousand voters. In addition to the newcomer Magé, in the state of Rio, the second round will be held in the capital Rio de Janeiro, in Duque de Caxias, Nova Iguaçu, São João de Meriti, Belford Roxo, São Gonçalo, Niterói, Campos do Goytacazes, Petrópolis and Volta Redonda.
Women make up the majority of the electorate in the state of Rio. The Electoral Registry indicated that there are 7,001,670 female voters, corresponding to 54% of the total. Men make up 6,022,774. Female voters and voters with a social name total 5,228.
In the 16 and 17 age group in the state of Rio, the number of voters increased from 35,321 in 2020 to 58,783 in 2024, which is equivalent to an increase of 66.4%. The same movement occurred in the age group over 70: the number went from 1,524,361 in 2020 to 1,752,759 in 2024, an increase of 14.9%. Voting is optional for young people under 18 and seniors who have already turned 70.
Of the total electorate in the state of Rio de Janeiro, 99,500 people declared having some type of disability. In 2020, the number of people with disabilities was 76,180.
In the country, the total number of voters reached 155,912,680. According to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), the largest electoral college in Brazil is the state of São Paulo, with 34,403,609 (22.06%) voters, followed by Minas Gerais, with 16,469,155 (10.56%) and Rio de Janeiro (8.35%).
