Richard Nephew: “We want to identify transparency in our governments”

The State Department’s Global Anti-Corruption Coordinator, Richard Nephew, together with a delegation, will visit Asunción from October 26 to 28. The official visit is to reaffirm US support for Paraguay in fighting corruption and promoting accountability.

This visit will be used as an opportunity to highlight the US government’s anti-corruption actions with its global partners and promote US anti-corruption policy.

The delegation of the Nephew Global Anti-Corruption Coordinator, are scheduled to meet with government representatives including the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Interior, the National Anti-Corruption Secretariat, judicial actors, among others; representatives of the private sector and civil society organizations.

On this occasion they seek to demonstrate the commitment to cooperate with Paraguay to combat corruption. “The Biden-Harris Administration has made it clear that fighting corruption is a core national security interest and a foreign policy priority of the United States. As the State Department’s first Global Anti-Corruption Coordinator, I will meet with partners in Paraguay to identify opportunities to promote transparency in our governments and economies, and accountability for those who undermine the rule of law.”

“As in many countries, corruption and impunity remain key obstacles to healthy democratic governance and equitable economic development. Coordinator Nephew’s visit will highlight the commitment of the United States to support the efforts of the Paraguayan government, the private sector, and civil society organizations to ensure that democracy benefits all the Paraguayan people,” added Ambassador Ostfield.

In Paraguay, the United States government works with different actors in the justice system to promote better system efficiency, and greater independence from political power, to strengthen the rule of law and fight corruption and impunity. They also clarified that they work with the private sector and civil society organizations in their function of citizen control, strengthening their institutional capacity to demand government accountability against corruption and impunity.

The visit of the Global Anticorruption Coordinator of the Department of State to Paraguay will be his first tour of the region. Before visiting Asunción, he will be in Guatemala on October 24 and 25.
