Ricardo Palma, “rock legend” of Nicaragua, dies

Nicaraguan musician Ricardo Palma, considered a “rock legend” of Nicaragua, died at the age of 75, after having marked one of the best musical eras in his country, his children Tatiana and Pavel Palma Vaughan reported this Wednesday.

“You left dad and although my heart is disconsolate, my head assures me that you are already in a better place, where nothing hurts anymore, where you can continue creating your electrifying music, you can play the piano and the guitar without your bones hurting. , you can run, jump and dance”, informed Tatiana, in an emotional public letter.

The causes of Palma’s death were not disclosed, but the Nicaraguan rocker suffered from arthritis that forced him to withdraw from the stage at the beginning of this century.

Palma, always dressed in a black shirt, jeans and dark boots, was the best-known rocker in Nicaragua after José “Chepito” Areas, former Santana member and member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland (USA). .

He was the main figure of the so-called “rock and roll boom” in Nicaragua, in the 1960s and 1970s, when multiple youth bands sought to be the local Beatles.

“You left me, but I’ll take you with me forever, in my veins, my chromosomes, in my daughters, in your music, in your legacy,” Tatiana stressed.

The veteran rocker led the most prominent group of those years, Los Rockets, who were inspired by The Beatles, Elvis Presley and the Mexican group Los rebels del rock.

Decades later, Palma founded the groups Axioma and Llama Viva, which were also successful locally.

Palma achieved his fame as a “rock legend” and lived from music despite the fact that, according to some scholars of local groups, “he dedicated himself exclusively to music”, and not so much to the commercial promotion of his groups.

Rock gave Palma a career, but also his wife, Martha Vaughan, one of Nicaragua’s best-known rock singers, and his four sons, one of whom, Pavel, followed in his footsteps.

He also gave “Cristina” one of his old and beloved guitars.

“I know that you are already enjoying yourself, while here I think that I am not going to hug you again and touch your bald head (bald head) cold and sweaty, and feel that little smell of yours a little like a cigarette, another little old man and perfume”, Tatiana wrote , in the last letter dedicated to his father.
