The volume of Brazilian retail sales rose 1.1% in February this year, compared to the previous month. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), this is the second consecutive increase in the indicator, which had grown by 2.1% in January.
Data from the Monthly Trade Survey (PMC), released today (13). show that the sector grew 1.3% compared to February 2021 and 1.7% in the 12-month period. In the first two months of this year, however, there was a variation of -0.1% in relation to the same period last year.
From January to February, six of the eight retail activities analyzed by the IBGE increased: books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (42.8%), fuel and lubricants (5.3%), furniture and appliances (2.3 %), fabrics, clothing and footwear (2.1%), other articles for personal and domestic use (1.6%) and hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (1.4%).
Only in pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles was there a decrease (-5.6%). The sector of equipment and supplies for computer and communication office was stable from one month to the next.

In the expanded retail trade, which also includes vehicles and construction material, the volume of sales rose 2% from January to February. The positive result was driven by vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces (5.2%). Building materials, on the other hand, fell by 0.4%.
Extended retail rose 0.3% compared to February 2021 and 4.8% in the 12-month period. Year-to-date, however, the sector retreated 0.6%.
Nominal revenue
Nominal revenue from retail trade rose 2.3% compared to January this year, 14.3% compared to February 2021, 12.6% year-to-date and 14.7% year-to-date. 12 months.
The expanded retail nominal revenue grew 2.9% compared to the previous month, 14.5% compared to February last year, 13.2% in the year and 18.8% in the 12-month period.
