The Brazilian retail trade ended 2021 with 2.4 million active establishments. The balance sheet, from the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC), shows a balance of 204,400 stores more than in the previous year.
A balance sheet released in March last year by CNC showed that, in 2020, Brazilian retail had lost 75,000 stores.
In 2021, micro-enterprises accounted for 77.4% of the year’s positive balance, with 158,230 new establishments. Small companies, with 29,990 new stores, accounted for 14.7% of the positive balance.
Among the activities, the super and mini-markets gained 54 thousand stores; utilities Sunelectrical appliances and electronics, 38.7 thousand; and apparel, footwear and accessories, 28.3 thousand.
Four states accounted for more than half of store openings: São Paulo (55.6 thousand), Minas Gerais (18.3 thousand), Paraná (15.1 thousand) and Rio of January (14.1 thousand).
“The relaxation of restrictions imposed on retail in several states and municipalities, especially after the end of the Monday wave of the pandemic, and the advance of vaccination, contributed to the tendency of increasing the circulation of consumers and, certainly, stimulated the movement of reopening of commercial establishments”, explained the president of CNC, José Roberto Tadros, through a press release. .
According to CNC, the sector’s real revenue grew 4.5% from 2020 to 2021, the biggest annual increase since 2018. From 2019 to 2020, the segment recorded a drop of 1.4%.
