The Supreme Court of Justice sent this Wednesday to the president of the Chamber of Senators, Beatriz Argimón, the request for the impeachment of the nationalist senator Gustavo Penades.
Prosecutor Alicia Ghione, who is investigating eight complaints against the legislator for sexual exploitation of minors, asked Judge Marcela Vargas to grant her request for impeachment. Vargas accepted it and asked the Court to send it to Parliament, which happened this Wednesday, sources from the corporation told The Observer.
This Thursday at 1:00 p.m., the Vice President of the Republic will meet the Senate bench coordinators to analyze whether the violation is dealt with in commission or directly in plenary, as requested by Penadés.
The nationalist senator presented another letter this Wednesday before Argimón asking that “the aforementioned request be voted on immediately in plenary, without going through the Constitution and Legislation Commission.”
The challenge is approved with two thirds of the votes of the plenary session. From there, the senator in question is suspended from his functions and at the disposal of the competent court, like any other citizen.
Argimón had already advanced that the request for immunity will be given a quick process. “Without a doubt, it will have a due diligence, in quick terms,” he stressed.
