Relatives of El Chipote prisoners launch SOS for their lives

The relatives of the political prisoners who remain locked up in the El Chipote torture prisons launched an SOS for the lives of their relatives and denounced with “extreme concern a generalized deterioration in health.”

They also denounced, through a virtual press conference, the existence of “a systematic policy of torture aimed at breaking their bodies and minds”, which includes confinement in punishment cells, solitary confinement, lack of food and attacks on their health. .

“Lack of systematic access to health in a timely, adequate and specialized manner. Diseases and illnesses are treated until the situation worsens or reaches extremes, they are not being taken to the infirmary, they are not being given information about their weight, nor the results of the few tests that are carried out on them,” they detailed by reading a statement. .

According to relatives, medical problems are more acute in prisoners who suffer from chronic illnesses, who are older or who require specialized medical attention. “We have identified a pattern of misdiagnosis, overmedication and/or inappropriate or contraindicated medication. This situation is causing worsening of diseases, allergies and even first and second degree burns, “they denounce.

They insisted on the demand that the incarceration regime be changed to house arrest for detainees with serious health problems and the elderly. They highlighted the case of the political prisoner Víctor Hugo Tinoco and the activist Violeta Granera.

Of Víctor Hugo Tinoco, his daughter Cristhian, denounced that he is having anxiety effects, that the Police do not give him the medicine that he has prescribed for several years to treat this condition and “he is having memory loss,” the young woman revealed.

Regarding Violeta Granera, they insisted on the need for her to be transferred to her home and recalled that she has lost her teeth for months and is not being treated in the prison center that the regime has imposed.

The most serious ailments

In the note that was distributed to the media, the relatives highlight the “worsening of heart problems and blood pressure” of the manager of the newspaper La Prensa Juan Lorenzo Holmann and the journalist Miguel Mendoza; Víctor Hugo Tinoco’s mental health problems; deterioration of Violeta Granera’s teeth; back injuries “that are leading to chronic problems” in prisoners Ana Margarita Vijil and Suyén Barahona.

They also denounced that several of the inmates of the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship are suffering from skin problems, “acquired by the conditions of
absolute unhealthiness in which they are found, which causes fungal infections, eczema
and even depigmentation.

Relatives subjected to touching and “sexualized assaults” during visits

During the seventh visit to the prisoners of El Chipote, between April 28 and 30, the Police also attacked their relatives. There is “constant harassment and lack of privacy, as well as arbitrariness by denying visits to relatives, limiting or giving incorrect information about people who participate in the visit and limiting physical contact with their relatives,” they denounce.

They also complained about “sexualized assaults during searches of female relatives, touching of genitals and breasts” by the soldiers of the dictatorship.

Blackmail, threats and theft of the “package”

Finally, the relatives of the prisoners insisted on the existence of mechanisms of torture, through the imposition of punishments and isolation to prevent them from complaining or denouncing what happens inside El Chipote.

There is the “consolidation of a policy of punishment and control that seeks silence their voices and stop demanding rights. Punishments have become more frequent and range from blackmail emotional, threats of transferring them to smaller cells and with worse conditions and discretionary delivery of parcels that even leads to deprivation of medicines, drinks and even toilet paper», concludes the statement.
