“Today we commemorate Lolita Soriano with great affection, on her 99th anniversary and we are heading towards her centenary, in which our vice president, compañera Rosario Murillo, has been very categorical in saying that for the centenary we are going to have the Lola museum ready. Soriano, the one that will be done in his last home”, Guido highlighted in statements offered to official media.

Smile operation closure affected thousands

The Operation Smile program was dedicated to treating, operating and supporting the rehabilitation of thousands of children with cleft palate problems. It was made up of volunteer medical personnel who donated their time and knowledge for these children. They had been in Nicaragua for more than 27 years and the operations were carried out in public hospitals in the country.

The NGO carried out, until last January, at least 50 surgical missions in the country, in which more than five thousand children benefited, teens and adults.

In 2021, the Operación Sonrisa Nicaragua program provided 31,577 follow-up consultations to more than 2,000 patients, many from rural areas, and carried out ten missions in which it benefited 202 patients with cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries.

In the first mission of 2022, carried out last February, they added 17 more surgeries, as reported on their social networks. However, the rest of this year’s surgical program, which was carried out together with the Ministry of Health (Minsa), was left up in the air after the Ortega decision that left them without legal status and without facilities.
