Regime recognizes shortage of disposable diapers on the island

MIAMI, United States.- A few days after publishing in CubaNet A report on the shortage of disposable diapers in Cuba, specifically in the city of Holguín, the Cuban state company CIMEX recognized this Friday the “notable shortage” of this product for babies, especially those sold in Cuban pesos (CUP).

According to a report on the official site Cubadebatewho quoted statements by the director of Retail Sales of CIMEX, Yusleydi Lezcano, the scarce offer will be directed towards the market in CUP and the Freely Convertible Currency (MLC).

“This month, in the sale of culeros in CUP, of a plan of 91,297 packages, 85,442 have already been delivered. All were sold in less than 72 hours,” said the official, who added that “with the same load of CL (liquidity capacity letter) we strengthen the culeros in CUP”.

Faced with complaints from users about the shortage, Lezacno said that deliveries are made by size because the Vietnamese company Thai Binh “only has two production lines for disposable diapers.”

In state stores, packages of disposable diapers are sold at 220 pesos, however, in the Cuban black market it is easy to find them and they reach 1,800, a prohibitive price in a country where the minimum wage is 2,100.

According to the text published just a few days ago in CubaNet, when the diapers go on sale they do not meet the population’s demand, in one part due to the scarcity of the product and in the other part due to diversion of merchandise.

In these diversions are involved “from the drivers who transport the merchandise to the grocers and store workers. There are two ways: they notify resellers in exchange for money. They mobilize their people and are the first in line. And the other is that the employees buy the package directly and then resell it. It is a big business,” a former employee of these state stores told CubaNet.
