Regime promotes charter flight Miami-Santa Clara: “Bridging distances” between families

MIAMI, United States. — A promotional charter flight from the Havanatur Celimar Agency arrived this Sunday at the Abel Santamaría International Airport, in Santa Clara, with 108 passengers on board.

The event was covered by the government agency Latin Presswhich collected statements from the official Daniel Alejandro Hernández, Havanatur’s main specialist.

According to Hernández, these flights aim to “shorten distances between Cuban families.”

The specialist from Havanatur, a group with close ties to the Cuban Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR), told the state media that the promotional flights are part of “the bridges that are sought to be consolidated between Cubans residing in the United States and their relatives in the Island”.

Hernández also assured that “the flights will continue for the rest of the summer and the weekly frequency is expected to grow in the near future with the entry of new charter agencies.”

The first of the promotional flights sponsored, among others, by Havanatur arrived in Cuba on July 19 through the Juan Gualberto Gómez International Airport (Varadero-Matanzas).

In accordance with Latin Pressthe promotion will also include flights to Camagüey, Holguín and Santiago de Cuba.

Last June, the Cuban Airport and Airport Services Company SA (ECASA) reported on the reestablishment of charter flights between the United States and several of the provinces of Cuba that have international airports.

On June 1, 2022, the US government lifted the restrictions on flights to Cuba imposed during the presidency of Donald Trump, which restricted air operations only to the Havana airport.

The measure, promoted by the current Democratic administration, was included in Order 2022-6-1 of the US Department of Transportation (DOT), which annulled the actions carried out between 2019 and 2020 by the administration of then President Donald Trump.

In addition to allowing charter flights, the new Order also extended permits for regular air operations to international airports in the interior of the Island.

On July 13, the Department of Transportation approved the company’s request American Airlines to resume its operations to various provinces of Cuba.

The four destinations chosen by American to restore flights to the interior of the Island were Varadero-Matanzas, Santa Clara (Villa Clara), Holguín and Santiago de Cuba.

A statement from the airline to which the British agency Reuters had access assured that the flights to these four destinations would improve “the service and access between the US and these points outside of Havana, after more than two years during the which said service was suspended.

American Airlines added that it “will fulfill the public interest by offering and maintaining the best connectivity to Cuba through its hub in Miami and providing substantial competition to other US airlines serving Cuba.”
