In recent weeks, the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship has escalated religious persecution against the Catholic Church in Nicaragua. The regime has ordered the expulsion of the Missionaries of Charity, the imprisonment of the priest Manuel Salvador García, from Nandaime, and Monsignor Leonardo Urbina, from Boaco. It also maintains constant harassment against religious leaders.

Israel González, a Nicaraguan journalist, assured this media outlet that the Church is persecuted by the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega, because it is the only institution that is denouncing the abuses and human rights violations that the regime has perpetrated. In addition, it is the only instance to which Nicaraguans can turn in search of support.

“The Ortega-Murillo regime has initiated a religious persecution against the Catholic Church, because it continues to be the only institution within Nicaragua that has been speaking about the serious violations of human rights, the de facto police state and all the arbitrariness that the regime has been doing since April 2018 and that bothers the dictatorship,” he said.

In addition, he pointed out that Catholic leaders have opted “for extreme prudence” and remain silent in the face of Ortega’s attacks, because they fear that the harassment, repression and persecution against the church may be greater.
