The Cartagena Fishing Club reported that it had already completed the interventions in the San Sebastián del Pastelillo Fort, a world heritage site that was painted without the authorization of the Ministry of Culture, in August of this year.

The infrastructure recovery work lasted two months and was under the supervision of the heritage unit of the Ministry of Culture.

It should be remembered that this fortification, by order of the club’s management, was subjected to masonry and painting works, without the advice of an expert in heritage restoration, affecting the city walls, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984.

After two months of non-stop work, today we can say that we have fulfilled the country and that we will continue to safeguard the heritage of all Colombians as we have been doing since 1943”, Assured Ximena Avilán, architect for the San Sebastián del Pastelillo Heritage Directorate.

And this was verified by a technical team from the Ministry of Culture, who toured the wall this Thursday.

During the tour of the walled complex, the technical team in charge of the intervention, the directors of the Fishing Club and officials of the Institute of Heritage and Culture of Cartagena de Indias participated.“, they said from the Ministry.

And they added: “The intervention carried out in the Pastelillo Fort allowed the removal of the synthetic paint applied in August of this year, as well as the recovery of the surface of the Property, without altering the state of materials, its structure, or aesthetics.“.

The event caused controversy at the time because this could affect the city’s heritage rating. For this reason, the Ministry of Culture recalled that with a declaration of Asset of Cultural Interest, the Fishing Club has “the mission of guarding and preserving the fortress of San Sebastián del Pastelillo and for no reason will it be able to carry out architectural reforms that may vary the original style of the fortress”.
