Only during the first week of 2023 more than 20 fires were registered. Firefighters reported the existence of several outbreaks registered in the interior of the country, for example the one that originated in Algorta, Río Negro.
This situation motivated the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) to extend to the population a set of recommendations aimed at avoiding fires and thus the various damages they generate.
Pablo Benítez, spokesman for the National Fire Department, explained that The country’s wildfire risk is at “very high” levels at the beginning of the year, which is due to the high temperatures and the water deficit that exists throughout the country.
MGAP advice
- Have water reservoirs at hand (tank, backpack with water).
- Take extreme care in operations with agricultural and forestry machinery, as well as with hand tools that can cause sparks.
- Avoid the hours of greatest exposure to the sun to carry out activities that imply a risk of fire.
- Avoid smoking and throwing cigarette butts near vegetation.
- Remove dry vegetation and keep fields clean.
- Avoid the accumulation of pruning remains and all combustible material
In addition, it was recalled that until April 30 it is forbidden to make fires and burns in the open air.
160 inspections of forest forests were carried out
Carlos Faroppa, director of the General Forestry Directorate of the MGAP, pointed out that in the first two weeks of the year 160 inspections were carried out in wooded properties. The function of the unit is to protect native forests, promote plantations and care for forestry.
In addition, it controls that each forestry project has a contingency plan with equipment to fight fire and clean and safe areas.
