Rains left obstructed roads, landslides and floods in Mérida

Inhabitants of the Libertador municipality in the city of Mérida denounced that in addition to the consequences of heavy rains, the drinking water that is reaching their homes is yellow and smells bad.


The state of Mérida has not escaped the heavy downpours recorded in Venezuela during the month of October. In the last two weeks, four municipalities have suffered the consequences of the passage of tropical waves, there have been floods, obstructed roads, landslides, collapse of bridges and destruction of some residences.

This was announced by Miguel Salcedo, an inhabitant of the sector, who claims to have suffered hours of anguish and terror when witnessing the flooding of the La Cuesta stream, located in the Libertador municipality in the city of Mérida. “It started to rain very hard and in less than half an hour the water was already entering the communities with great force. While this was going on, it was dragging the back of Mrs. Petra’s house and her husband’s. Both had to be evicted from the place ”he recounted.

Since then, the bridge that connects the La Cuchulla and El Playón sectors has remained under water, for which some 12 families were forced to temporarily abandon their residences.

The flooding of the La Palmita waterfall also generated a landslide and the collapse of the main road that connects the Santa Cruz de Mora, El Bosque and La Chicharronera sectors.

Luis José Rondón is one of the locals and assured that the water level has begun to drop, however, he considered it alarming to learn about the suspension of the drinking water service in different areas of the city.

Some residents of the town of Santa Cruz de Mora have denounced that the drinking water has begun to arrive yellow and smells bad, which worries the residents, who have found it necessary to buy filtered water to guarantee their hydration. .

“Even in the schools the yellow water is arriving and our children, due to ignorance, ingest it. It is necessary that they guarantee us drinking water for the population that has been hit hard by the latest rains recorded in the city,” Rondón stressed.

Until the afternoon of Wednesday, October 26, the inhabitants of the Libertador, Rangel, Arzobispo Chacón and Campo Elías municipalities continued to report lack of drinking water, landslides and landslides on the main roads, in addition to the flooding of rivers and streams that keeps them on alert , for which they ask the authorities to guarantee basic services to the most affected communities.

Jehyson Guzmán, governor of Mérida, has assured through social networks that Civil Protection officials remain on permanent alert for possible new overflows, for which he called on locals living in high-risk areas to be attentive to any eventuality that may arise and invited them to immediately notify the authorities.
