Rain emergency declared in 220 towns in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais

The continued rains have left thousands of families homeless.

A total of 220 towns in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, in the south of the country, were declared an emergency situation due to the heavy rains that have affected that region since the end of September last year.

Since that date, 21 people have died due to causes attributable to the storms, while 2,015 were left homeless and 11,256 had to be evicted, Agencia Brasil reported, quoted by DPA.

The weather forecast warned of further precipitation as temperatures remained above 30 degrees.

Last Friday the Piumhi River overflowed its banks as it passed through the Capitol region and caused roadblocks.

In this sense, Civil Defense assured that all the affected houses have already been visited and that the water supply was cut off.

Meanwhile, the weather forecast warned of new rainfall while temperatures remain above 30 degrees.
