A group of radical leaders asked this Thursday the president of the National Convention of the UCR, Gastón Manes, that this body issue a statement with its position on events reported by the press in which “officials and senior magistrates” such as the Buenos Aires Minister of Justice and Security, Marcelo D’Alessandro, are involved.
Among these episodes is the exchange of chats attributed to D’Alessandro, -of the PRO, a party of which the UCR is a political partner- with a court official and with a businessman from the tow truck service in the city of Buenos Aires. Aires, among others.
“Citizens’ confidence in the quality of their institutions and representatives is essential for their legitimacy”said the leaders, who warned that “when that confidence is replaced by suspicion, it is not the institutions or the representatives who are discredited, it is Democracy itself that is degraded, so that transparency in the acts of public officials It’s essential to sustain it.”
“In recent weeks we have witnessed a series of revelations of a journalistic nature, and of still unverified veracity, that exhibit officials and high-ranking magistrates in behaviors that, if true, deserve the clearest repudiation of any citizen who, committed to the full validity of our political system, there is”, maintained the national conventioners Raúl Borrás, Carlos Lahiteau, Liliana Denot, Liliana Cichelli and Juan F. Armagnague
They added that “The only way to clear up these shadows is to expose the true nature of the facts to public opinion, either in court, if applicable, or in the face of a parliamentary investigation that determines or dismisses, in favor of the truth, political responsibilities that could have taken place”.
“That is why the signatories, National Convention Members of the Radical Civic Union, request an urgent declaration of the Convention, setting without lukewarmness the political position that the affiliates expect and the historical legacy of our party imposes.”
