Public officials protest for raises

The Coordinator of Guilds of Public Officials and Decentralized Entities, called a demonstration for today, Thursday, April 7, starting at 09:00. The appointment will take place in the National Congress.

“We call a meeting on the esplanade of the National Congress, located in the Microcentro Asunción, in order to continue the fight for the demands requested as public servants. We will not give up 15% of the salary readjustment that by right corresponds to us. Without a fight, there is no victory,” reads part of the statement.

The document was signed by Porfiria Ocholasky, president of the Coordinator, who participated in several proselytizing acts, and Sixto Gadea.

Specifically, they demand a 15% salary increase for around 250,000 public officials.

In contact with the media, Ocholasky stated that they never reached an agreement with the government, as was initially believed, after Velázquez signed a memorandum of understanding.

“There was never an agreement, we requested a work table made up of four people from the Government. The Vice President has already said that there will be no salary increase for public officials, in the same sense are the Minister of Labor and Mauricio Espínola (Abdo’s private secretary) “, he told the media.

In the photo of the meeting with Velázquez, the participants can be seen celebrating the signing of the Vice President.

When asked about this celebration, she replied that it was carried out because it is the first time in history that a work table is formed.

“We are looking for mechanisms so that our orders are not left for the end. We believe that it is fair, because we could not due to the pandemic, now is the time. It’s been seven years since civil servants have had a raise. Now the raises are for everyone,” he noted.

The police, military and teachers are not included in this request, because they have a different regime.

BACKGROUND
At the beginning of April, a meeting between the leaders of the Coordinator with Hugo Velázquez, Vice President of the Republic, Carla Bacigalupo, Minister of Labor and Mauricio Espínola, Abdo’s private secretary, became public.

The union of public officials and the ruling party are working on an increase of 15% for the sector. This will be applied in the PGN 2023. Some of the measures include labor deprecarization (temporary jobs become permanent) among other benefits.

Hugo Velázquez himself, Vice President of the Republic, was the one who signed the document of understanding during the fortnight of March. This meeting became public because it was disclosed on social networks and later confirmed by the authorities.

However, when the Vice President was consulted on the point on Tuesday morning, he replied that if Congress approves new increases, Abdo will end up vetoing them.
