Prosecutor Enrique Rodríguez requested a formalization hearing from the Judiciary for one of the two policemen who attacked young motorcyclists in Jardines del Hipódromo (Montevideo) –whose images were captured by one of the victims– reported the spokesman for the agency, Javier Benech.
From now on, the Judiciary will have a period of 20 days to fix the instance and give rise to Rodríguez’s request.
The case became public as a result of the dissemination of a video filmed by one of the detainees. In the footage shared by the journalist Gabriel Pereyra, you can see how two policemen attacked two motorcyclists with punches and kicks after an argument over a fine. According to the driver of the motorcycle, the infraction did not correspond.
After a few seconds of discussion, one of the policemen began to hit one of the motorcyclists, first with a punch, and then with a kick that knocked him to the ground several meters behind the first blow. In the middle he also tried to hit the second driver twice, who was recording the events.
Then, the man was handcuffed on his knees on the ground, while he was rebuked by the police. The other motorcyclist was handcuffed by the other without resisting, and the cell phone that recorded the scene was taken by another person who was accompanying the drivers, who criticized the actions of the uniformed men before finishing the video.
The officials were summarized to start the administrative investigation, informed the Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber.
The 2nd Turn Flagrancia Prosecutor, Patricia Rodríguez, took the case and summoned the police and the attacked to testify, as confirmed at the time to The Observer.
The Prosecutor’s Office began investigating the case as a possible crime of abuse of authority against the detainees.
