This Friday the presidents and representatives of the ruling party met at the headquarters of the Liberal Party, in order to coordinate a strategy for the election of the Constitutional Council that will take place on May 7. The leaders of the Democratic Revolution (RD), the Communist Party (PC), the Socialist Party (PS), the Social Convergence (CS), among others, were part of the event.
Initially, the president of the Party for Democracy (PPD), Natalia Piergentili, proposed that the center-left go on two lists to broaden the base of support and influence the debate with their proposals. It is for this reason that she assured that “we do not want to have the power of veto, we want to have the power of influence, and for that we need a greater capacity for dialogue than a greater number of directors to stress the council.”
In this context, Pergentili added that “we have not finely landed the calculations, we are working on it, but we believe that the difference between one or two directors versus really being able to have a story that speaks to the general public of the center and the center-left, of the sense common and compulsory voting, the loss of perhaps one or two councilors diminishes”.
The one who agreed on the idea of separating the lists was the president of the DC, Alberto Undurraga, who, despite not being part of the discussions, pointed out that the center-left is different from the Broad Front and the Communist Party, since “it promotes transformations with stability ; social rights and economic development, respect for human rights and citizen security. Therefore, it is logical that it be expressed in different lists, which is magnificent for the citizens and also has better electoral results,” argued the deputy.
