President of the Judicial Council resigns from office

He said that his decision has to do with the ruling of the Constitutional Court that withdraws the power to dictate suspension measures to judicial servants.

Maria del Carmen Maldonado resigned on the morning of this Wednesday, February 2, 2022 from his position as President of the Council of the Judiciary. He reported this decision on his Twitter account with a post accompanied by a letter of explanation.

Maldonado was in charge of the body from January 23, 2019 and was the first woman to take office.

The now former president of the tip stated that his decision It occurs after a ruling by the Constitutional Court that removes the Presidency of the CNJ the power to dictate measures of suspension of activities judicial officials facing disciplinary proceedings for commit offenses considered serious or very serious.

During his three years in office, Maldonado dictated 16 preventive measures of suspension of judicial servants in controversial cases. Among those sanctioned were the prosecutors who acted in the case of torture of the children of Naranjal; judges and judicial assistants in the cases of draws of causes in the yunda caseamong others.

On January 12, 2022, the Constitutional court issued a ruling that establishes that for these suspension measures are constitutional “must be exercised exclusively by the Council of the Judiciary and not individually by its president.. (DPV)
