President of Colombia asks the prosecutor’s office to investigate his brother and his eldest son

Judith Pena | March 2, 2023

The Colombian President Gustavo Petro, asked the Attorney General of the Nation to carry out all the necessary investigations towards his brother Juan Fernando Petro Urrego and his eldest son Nicolás Petro Burgos, this for alleged meetings in prisons where they would pose as members of the Government to give benefits to detainees in exchange for information.

Through a statement, Petro said that “the only official who has the endorsement of the Government to have contact with organizations outside the law, with the sole objective of seeking peace, is the High Commissioner for Peace, Danilo Rueda”.

I specify that your Government will not grant benefits to criminals in exchange for bribes, since they are in the construction of legal mechanisms so that these groups outside the law take advantage of justice, make reparations to the victims and stop violence in the cities and other territories.

He added that no matter who it is, justice must prevail because whoever wants to interfere in that purpose, or take personal advantage of it, has no place in the Government, even if they are members of his family. “I trust that my brother and my son can prove their innocence but I will respect the conclusions reached by justice,” he concluded.
