President Gabriel Boric does not rule out enabling Punta Peuco and Penal Cordillera due to overcrowding in the country’s prisons

The President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, did not rule out enabling the Punta Peuco Special Preventive Detention and Penitentiary Compliance Center and the Cordillera Penitentiary Compliance Center, as prisons due to the lack of space and overcrowding in other prisons in the country.

In a conversation with Regional Radio, the President said that “today we have prisons, particularly in the central zone and in some areas of the country, with a high degree of overcrowding, and in other places where it is still not possible to have more inmates.”

“Any person who is arrested and sentenced to a prison sentence will have to go to jail,” since “the fact that there is no space is not an impediment,” he added.

As a result of this, the head of state indicated that he will talk about it with the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Marcela Ríos.

“We have to make investment in infrastructure, precisely so that prisons are spaces for resocialization and not for permanently returning to crime and that they are not a risk to life,” he concluded.
