The President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo Cohen, met this afternoon with the leaders of Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, prior to participating in the panel on the Alliance for Development in Democracy, within the CEO Summit Forum.
In the panel, the Panamanian president highlighted that during the handling of the pandemic he focused the discussions with his team on three issues that form a balanced triangle: health, social matters and the economy.
He stated that a policy called Plan Colmena, created to reduce poverty and inequality in Panama, is being implemented.
“These programs represent some of the policies that have allowed us to promote inclusive development, reduce poverty, maintain social peace, and therefore reduce threats to democracy,” said Cortizo Cohen.
The panel on the Alliance for Development in Democracy was developed by Panama, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic to bring together democratic countries that aim to strengthen democratic institutions, meet the needs of the population and promote economic growth through collaboration.
He explained to those present that, through the Alliance for Development in Democracy, countries also discuss issues such as irregular migration, security and corruption.
“In the coming months it will be critical to continue working together to address the issues that have forced migrants to leave their home countries in the first place,” he said.
He mentioned that Panama will continue to be an ally of the region and will share policies and initiatives to help maintain social peace and contribute to reducing the factors that promote irregular migration.
Regarding the relationship between the Government, civil society and companies to achieve the vision and objectives that the Alliance proposes, President Cortizo Cohen explained that Panama understands how important it is to build a solid alliance with the private sector to guarantee inclusive and sustainable development. .
“We want to take advantage of our logistics capacity, our strong financial system, new regulations and unprecedented connectivity to do our part in this new regional effort,” he said.
In the evening hours, Cortizo Cohen will participate in the opening ceremony of the IX Summit of the Americas, an event led by the President of the United States, Joseph Biden, and the First Lady, Jill Biden.
The official mission is made up of the first lady of the Republic, Yazmín Colón de Cortizo; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Erika Mouynes; the Minister of Commerce and Industries, Federico Alfaro Boyd; the designated ambassador of Panama in Washington, Ramón Martínez; the Panamanian ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), María Roquebert; the consul of Panama in Los Angeles, Gilda García; and Dr. Camilo Alleyne.
