Postponing vote on Brazilian deputy who insulted Ukrainians

The board session opened and closed on Monday without any business being transacted.

Of the 33 senators that make up the collegiate (18 regulars and 15 alternates), only eight registered their presence, below the 10 necessary to open the vote that will be rescheduled.

In audios leaked by the press and charged to Do Val, alias Mamãe Falei, the pre-candidate for the right-wing Podemos party for the governorship of Sao Paulo states that Ukrainian women are “easy because they are poor”, in addition to other sexist evaluations.

He allegedly considers Ukrainian women goddesses and compares the queues of refugees to those in nightclubs in Brazil.

Senator Humberto Costa wrote on social networks that “parliamentary immunity is not a green light for disrespect for the country’s legislation.”

He warned that by attacking Ukrainian women, Do Val “trampled the regulations of the Sao Paulo Assembly, the Code of Ethics, the Constitution and the Maria da Penha law (protects women against domestic and family violence). It cannot go unpunished. And the Senate must listen to him », she referred.

Costa denounced that the deputy’s statements affect the image of Brazil abroad. “The attacks on Ukrainian women are regrettable from all points of view: moral, political, ethical. He is a parliamentarian, representative of the people », he remarked.

Podemos vehemently repudiates the statements and, based on them, immediately launches an internal disciplinary procedure to clarify the facts, reported the party’s president, Renata Abreu.

Senator Flávio Arns, Do Val’s party colleague, spoke in favor of expulsion from the ranks.

«We have already requested his summary expulsion from Podemos. Unacceptable action against women in general. Tomorrow is International Women’s Day and we said that the right thing to do would be to expel him today, the eve of the date,” she stressed.
