Pope Francis asked that “we pray for the migrants who died yesterday in a tragic fire in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico,” including people of Colombian, Ecuadorian, Guatemalan, Honduran, Salvadoran, and Venezuelan nationality.

Pope Francis expressed his solidarity with the victims of the fire in the Ciudad Juárez immigration center, Mexico, and in which, according to official sources, at least 39 people died and another 28 were injured.

The fire, whose causes have not yet been established, occurred in a center of the National Institute of Migration, in Ciudad Juárez, on the border with the United States. There were a total of 71 migrants from Central and South America, who had been detained in this facility.

According to the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, everything indicates that the tragedy was caused by the burning of mats after the migrants found out that they were going to be deported.

“We assume that they knew that they were going to be deported and that, as a sign of protest, they put mattresses at the door of the reception center and set them on fire, without imagining that this would cause this terrible misfortune,” the president said during his daily press conference. .
