Politicians congratulate Norma Piña after being elected to preside over the Supreme Court

The Citizen Movement Parliamentary Group, coordinated by Deputy Jorge Álvarez Máynez, also celebrated the appointment of Minister Norma Lucía Piña Hernández.

“We celebrate the fact that it is the first time in history that a woman assumes this position and we recognize the determination to break what seemed like an inaccessible glass ceiling, as she indicated when assuming the commitment to represent women from this space” he said in a statement.

The minister has also received congratulatory messages from some senators such as Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong, Claudia Ruiz Massieu, Emilio Alvarez Icaza, Margarita Zavala and Miguel Ángel Mancera.

Some organizations like Green Tide Mexico, 50+1, Designations, United Mexico and Citizen Power MX They have also recognized the appointment of Piña Hérnandez as a historical fact, for being the first woman to hold the position and being a sign of the autonomy of the SCJN.

In this sense, other figures such as the president of the General Council of the National Electoral Institute (INE), Loronzo Córdova, stressed that the independence of the Federal Judiciary will be important for the preservation of the constitutional order and for the future of democracy.

“It is great news for all of us to have a woman (professional and independent), for the first time in history, at the helm of the @SCJN,” he posted on Twitter.

Minister Yasmin Esquivel Mossa, who also aspired to occupy the presidency of the SCJN, also expressed her appreciation and congratulations to Minister Piña Hernández.

The retired senator and minister Olga Sánchez Cordero also expressed her appreciation to the new president of the SCJN, at the same time that she wished her success in her management.

In the first round of voting in the SCJN, Minister Norma Piña obtained three votes, while the other four candidates tied with two votes.

In the second round, Minister Yasmín Esquivel was eliminated, with only one vote, amid the scandal over the alleged plagiarism of her thesis.

The contest was defined between Piña and Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena, but until the third round, in which the result was given in favor of Norma Lucía Piña Hernández.

His period will be from January 2, 2023 to December 31, 2026.
