Political prisoners, in danger of “malnutrition and extreme weight loss” due to “drastic reduction” of their food

Relatives of political prisoners are “extremely alarmed” by the drastic reduction in food rations that the Nicaraguan regime provides to people detained in the cells of the Directorate of Judicial Assistance in Managua. They affirm that the situation is causing an increase in infectious and stomach diseases.

“We denounce that there is a lack of non-compliance with the law in the visitation regime, non-compliance with the periods and the refusal to guarantee visits and communication with children and people with special needs. All this, in addition to violating the law, as well as international human rights conventions and the Nelson Mandela Rules, seek to create anxiety and anxiety in family members, “says the statement.

They assure that the “drastic” reduction of food for political prisoners after the last visit reaches extremes “incompatible with life.” This time “they were reduced more than ever, causing malnutrition and extreme weight loss,” say their relatives.

“We urgently demand an increase in rations, as well as an improvement in the nutritional value of our family members’ diets. If the state does not have the capacity to provide adequate food, we reiterate our willingness to bring these foods daily. We demand that they allow us to deliver parcels on a weekly basis and that they can handle it better autonomously in their cells, not like now that they are discretionary and in small quantities, as happens in the prisons of the Penitentiary System,” the statement added.

Recently, the president of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), Julissa Mantilla, denounced before the member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) the situation of political prisoners who “remain in conditions contrary to human dignity and, many of them, in a delicate state of health. This situation has led to the granting of precautionary measures by the IACHR as well as provisional measures by the Inter-American Court for the protection of approximately 70 people deprived of liberty, between both mechanisms.

The Commission, through its representative, demanded that the Nicaraguan regime guarantee his integrity, his life and the immediate release of the political prisoners who are under “inhuman conditions.”

Relatives also denounce the increase in illnesses inside the cells of the regime due to the “great fragility and weakening caused by the policy of imposing hunger, the presence of illnesses such as infections in the throat and stomach has increased. Added to this is the deterioration of medical care, the lack of specialized medical care that allows clear diagnoses, and the required treatments, such as the cases of Pedro Vásquez, Miguel Mendoza, Freddy Navas, Marco Fletes, Irving Larios, Violeta Granera and Juan Lorenzo. Holmann”.

They demand prompt specialized medical attention for the political prisoners who require it and for those who are under house arrest because they fear that they will develop new diseases due to the lack of treatment.
