Miguel Mora Chávez, known as “Miguelito”, was able to see his father for the first time, the political prisoner and owner of the confiscated television channel 100% Noticias, Miguel Mora-Barberena, imprisoned in the Judicial Assistance Directorate (DAJ) in Managua, since June 20, 2021.

The visit was this Saturday morning, August 20, as confirmed by his wife, also a journalist Verónica Chávez, to Article 66. Chávez expressed emotion that “I cannot describe in words the reunion between Miguelito and his father. It was something so emotional in the midst of tears, laughter, hugs, kisses and prayer.

He added that he describes this visit from his son as a gift from God because today the political prisoner has his birthday. “They called me to appear at Judicial Assistance to have a visit with the child (Miguelito).” The visit was at 10:130 in the morning, we were there for two hours », he narrated.

«Thank God because after a year and two months they managed to see each other. Miguelito is happy, it was a smile that you cannot imagine (…) Miguel screamed: “Glory to God! Glory be to God, we did it,’” Chavez said excitedly.

As usual, the visit was guarded by police officers, who could not prevent or avoid the emotional meeting. “Miguel threw himself on the child,” said Mora’s wife.

Regarding the physical condition of Miguel Mora, the journalist points out that it is a miracle that he is healthy, despite the fact that he is “extremely” thin. “Tomorrow, Miguel will fast in thanksgiving because he was able to see his son and they were able to give him his right.” She also said that he will join Miguel’s prayers so that he can also be allowed a bible.

The decision of the police authorities came after the ninth visit —on Saturday, July 23—, the former presidential candidate reported that he was on a hunger strike and that he would not try solid food until he saw his son and was allowed to enter from a bible.

Mora had been on a hunger strike for more than 50 days. Her wife, Verónica Chávez, had expressed concern about the repercussions that this decision would have on the opponent’s physical integrity.

Mora was sentenced by the Second Judge of the Criminal Trial District of Managua, Nadia Camila Tardencilla, to 13 years in prison, allegedly for conspiring “to undermine national integrity.”

The journalist was subjected to attacks, cyber harassment by supporters of the regime, and the equipment, frequency, and facilities of Canal 100% Noticias were confiscated. Since the end of 2018, he was imprisoned for the first time for six months in the Jorge Navarro National Penitentiary System, in Tipitapa, and was released on June 11, 2019, under the controversial Amnesty Law.

He was then imprisoned for a second time in June 2021, when Mora was one of the presidential candidates who had set out to challenge dictator Daniel Ortega for power. Along with him, seven other possible rivals of Ortega were also imprisoned.
