Plastic industry in Querétaro seeks alternatives to meet the demand for personnel and turnover

Queretaro, Qro. The plastics industry registers turnover levels that have currently reached between 15 and 20% of the workforce, according to records from the Querétaro Plastics Cluster.

East behavior in the working market derives from the high demand for specialized profiles and the shortage of professionals suffered by the industry; factors that have worsened with the relocation of suppliers in the country, explained the president of the cluster, Arturo Nava Guerrero.

In general, on average we walk between 15 and 20% turnover, this speaks of great mobility (…) I speak for the plastics industry (…) The turnover exists and is high, we have a great advantage in the state, that there is work , then those who want to work can afford to look for better alternatives and be growing, but at the same time it becomes a vice because they get used to being chapulines from one company to another company”, he said.

Faced with this dilemma, the local industry is studying strategies to remedy the demand for personnel and rotation, with the aim of transforming the passive workforce into an active one, he added.

Although rotation is usually a component of the labor market, the industrialist said that this year it has intensified, particularly in the plastics industry; however, he estimated that in the rest of the manufacturing branches the behavior is similar.

“It happens that the issue of nearshoring or relocation of projects in our sector grows and now we have challenges with the issue of labor, that is, we need labor that we are now satisfying for the current requirement, imagine with new projects that are coming to be implemented in the next six to 12 months, we need to do something urgent as a cluster”, I say.

Nava Guerrero explained that even when a company takes an average of two weeks to find a profile, the worker leaves the vacancy in a period of two to three weeks; This situation occurs to a greater extent in operator positions.

“The profile is complicated, especially as an operator, because there is a physical exercise and it is understood that there is fatigue and wear. And we as employers have to see how we can improve conditions as much as possible, in order to close this pothole,” said the businessman.

The plastic industry It has a current demand of 1,000 workers, the main requirement is for machinery operators, according to the cluster.

education model

Promoting the dual education model and the professionalization of employees, he explained, is one of the alternatives proposed by industrialists to counteract the high level of turnover.

In this sense, he added, the industry works hand in hand with training centers, universities and various educational institutions.

Until August 2022, the transformation industry employed 238,370 people in the state, contributing 36% of the total jobs affiliated with the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).
