Breast cancer is an abnormal and disorderly proliferation or growth of malignant cells in the breast tissue, which have the ability to spread to the lymph nodes and other organs of the body (metastasis).

According to data collected by the World Cancer Observatorya platform of the International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization (WHO), in Venezuela it is estimated that during the year 2020, an average of 3,500 women died of breast cancer; which is equivalent to approximately nine women per day.

These figures are an estimate that is probably another underreporting, due to the opacity of the mortality and morbidity data of the Venezuelan population, which have not been made public by the Venezuelan State since 2016. In addition, this number reveals an average, but it does not contemplate the setbacks in the country’s public health system in recent years.

The WHO data on Venezuela, even showing that it is an underreporting, indicates that the mortality rate by age due to breast cancer is approximately 19 deaths per 100,000 women, that is, almost 30% more than the average of the population. region in South America.

According to the NGO funcamama, based on data from women who received support from this institution between 2018 and 2021, showed that although the life expectancy of women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in the region is five years, in Venezuela 80% of women with the same condition they lived less than three years, a figure that includes 10% who died during the first year.
