BC reports data leak of 2,100 Pix keys

PIX leaks will occur with some frequency, says Campos Neto

Data leaks from Pix, the Central Bank’s (BC) instant payment system, will occur with some frequency, said today (11) the body’s president, Roberto Campos Neto. According to him, the cases registered so far are light, and the monetary authority is working to ensure that the occurrences are as few as possible.

“As we understand that this world of data is going to grow more and more exponentially, leaks are going to happen with some frequency. Not wanting to trivialize leaks, because we are going to attack all leaks so that they are as few as possible”, said the BC president at an event promoted by Esfera Brasil, a group that promotes meetings between businessmen, entrepreneurs and public sector leaders.

Campos Neto clarified that the information exposed so far does not include data such as passwords and financial transactions. The leaks mostly cover publicly obtainable data, he added.

“We sometimes have a leak, which is name and CPF. Name and CPF are on the person’s checkbook. Sometimes you have a telephone leak, the cell phone is the key, but most people have their cell phone open, you enter a consultation system, enter the name and find the phone number”, explained Campos Neto .

He said that the BC has adopted a more transparent stance than that of other countries, when reporting all leaks on its website . Last week, the BC said it would no longer publicize Pix key data exposure cases through notices, only listing the incidents on its website.PIX leaks will occur with some frequency, says Campos Neto

Since the creation of Pix, in November 2020, the BC has registered three cases of information leakage. The most recent was last week, when 2,112 Pix keys of customers of the payment institution Logbank were leaked.

New features

Campos Neto informed that the Central Bank is developing new features for Pix, such as the automatic debit function and the remuneration of money that is stopped in the account. He announced an “international agenda” for the instant payments system, but gave no details.

The BC president presented figures for the Pix Saque and Pix Troco modalities, which came into force at the end of November. According to Campos Neto, Pix Saque, which allows withdrawals at commercial establishments and ATMs, handled R$9.7 million in January, with a volume of 66,600 transactions in the month.

Pix Troco, which allows withdrawals when paying for purchases, moved BRL 100,000 last month, with 1,300 uses in January.
