The Universal Guaranteed Pension (PGU) is a State benefit that replaces the old-age benefits of the Solidarity Pilar, whose monthly payment is the responsibility of the Social Welfare Institute (IPS). This is one of the most requested benefits by people aged 65 or over, who can receive an amount of $206,173 pesos.
The amount is approximate since it depends on the pension of each beneficiary. In the month of April the Short Law entered into force, so the benefit will be different and broader. Currently one of the requirements to receive the PGU it is not being part of a family group belonging to the richest 10% of the population aged 65 or over.
As of April, the new requirement is that these people who were not beneficiaries do not belong to a family group belonging to the richest 10% of the country’s total population. That is, they will be able to benefit from the PGU all persons belonging to the 90% of households with the lowest income of the Chilean population.
On the other hand, the Social Welfare Institute (IPS) will internally re-evaluate the applications and from this month will contact those people who were rejected for the PGU who were rejected between August 2022 and March 2023.
What are the current requirements?
- Be 65 years of age or older.
- Not integrating the richest 10% of the country’s population.
- Proof of residence in the territory of the Republic of Chile in these two cases:
1- A period of not less than 20 continuous or discontinuous years, since the applicant has reached 20 years of age.
2- A period of not less than four years of residence in the last five years immediately prior to the date of presentation of the application to qualify for the benefit of PGU.
