Petro will continue with the Temporary Protection Statute for Venezuelans

The Joint Commission of the Administrative Department of the Presidency of the Republic (Dapre) of the Colombian Government of Gustavo Petro made three important announcements about what will be the new management of the Office for the Attention and Integration of Migrants.

presidential character

The first announcement has to do with “providing continuity and presidential leverage to the migration issue, because Colombia is a benchmark at this time for the integration of migrants in Latin America and worldwide,” reported Iván Mauricio Gaitán, joint coordinator for migration issues, this Monday. during the presentation of the Dapre report.

ETPV will continue and be extended to other nationalities

The second point is that: “the Temporary Protection Statute will continue. The idea is that it be enlarged for other nationalities and so that we can have the guarantee of the rights of migrant populations in Colombia, under the tutelage of the Presidency of the Republic”, said Gaitan.

In this sense, he indicated that “the Statute (Temporary Protection for Venezuelan Migrants) must be extended immediately and in the next 100 days the strategy will be fully integrated with local and subnational authorities.”

Respect for the human rights of migrants

The third element is “to send a message to the international cooperation that has allocated more than 90% of the integration resources for the migrant population in the country that the migration strategies are going to continue, that the President (Petro) has drawn a line very clear and is to guarantee the Rights of migrant populations.

The Joint Coordinator for Migratory Affairs posted on his Twitter account @IvanMGaitan that “the presidential leadership on human mobility will have the strong support of the coop. international and will be a priority in the government of change @petrogustavo”.

With these announcements, the rights of migrants in Colombia, including Venezuelans, will be protected by the Office for the Attention and Integration of Migrants, which will report directly to the Colombian Presidency.

Now foreigners of a nationality other than Venezuelan who reside in Colombia will also enjoy the Temporary Statute of Protection for Migrants.

And according to Gaitán’s message, addressed “to the international community, civil society and the Venezuelan population that is waiting right now if the registry is extended or if the registry is increased, in the government of Gustavo Petro they will surely find the guarantee of rights to all and all migrants.

The statistics of the Special Commission to Investigate Crimes against Venezuelan Migrants of the National Assembly indicate that there are 1,842,390 Venezuelans in Colombian territory, according to figures from Legal Medicine, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the Prosecutors’ Offices of the countries in the region.
