The Nobel Peace Prize winner, Adolfo Pérez Esquivelsaid on Tuesday that he is “concerned” about the “propagation of hate speech” in Argentina after the assassination attempt and the threats received by Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.

“I concern about the spread of hate speech. The political opposition is necessary in any democracy to seek the common good, but the role of opposition is being confused with that of enemies,'” Pérez Esquivel said in statements to AM750 radio.

The Vice President received death threats this Monday afternoon through a phone call to number 911 that was detected in La Plata, as confirmed by sources from the Ministry of Security, and given this fact, the federal judge María Eugenia Capuchetti ordered to reinforce the custody of the former president.

The intimidating call came eleven days after the assassination attempt by Fernando Sabag Montiel, who is detained in the framework of a case that Capuchetti instructs and in which the prosecutor Carlos Rívolo also acts.

“The attack against Cristina Kirchner showed the worst of political violence”Adolfo Perez Esquivel

“The attack against Cristina Kirchner showed the worst of political violence. Intolerance and the attempt to overthrow governments occur throughout the continent. Before it was through military coups, now it is through lawfare,” Pérez Esquivel said.

In this line, he recalled that the exacerbated hatred “does not build democracy”, but “on the contrary, attacks it”.

“The big hegemonic media are promoting these policies,” said the referent, alluding to the editorial that appeared yesterday in Clarín, entitled “The bullet that did not come out, and the ruling that will come out.”

“Pablo Vacca’s editorial contributes to fomenting division and violence. The media here and in the region attack popular governments,” he stated.

Finally, the leader of the human rights movement who denounced the last civic-military dictatorship maintained that “if the opposition does not build in favor of the people, it is against them.”

“If the pitcher is still full of dirt, the light will not be able to enter. I was at the mass in Luján and it was sad that there was no one from the opposition parties present. It was to pray and to ask,” he concluded.
