The “Pepe Sánchez” Trova Festival, one of the most important and oldest musical events on the island, began its 60th edition this Thursday in Santiago de Cuba.
The event, which will last until next Monday, March 20, had its opening gala last night in the Salón de los Grandes, of the legendary Casa de la Trova in Santiago.
Several of the participating artists performed at the evening, including troubadour Eduardo Sosa, president of the festival, as well as Xiomara Vidal, the Cohiba Duo, Mauricio Figueral and Agusto Blanca, who performed classics from the Cuban musical repertoire. according to review the Cuban News Agency (ACN).
At the gala itself, several of these artists and others were recognized, such as the troubadour Marta Campos and the Moneda Nacional septet.
Previously, a commemorative plaque was unveiled for the declaration of the Cuban Trova as Cultural Patrimony of the Nation, on December 2, a fact to which the festival is dedicated on this occasion.
In addition, the event pays tribute to important figures of the troubadour genre, such as Compay Segundo, Vicente González Rubiera (Guyún), Ignacio Bambú (Pucho el Pollero) and Pepe Sánchez himself, among others, aim the local newspaper Sierra Maestra.
The event will count, as usual, with musical presentations in different stages of Santiago, such as the aforementioned Casa de la Trova, the Plaza de Marte, the Salón de los Vitrales, the Patio de Artex, and the Casa de las Tradiciones. Similarly, it will be the traditional “Trail of the Troubadours”, on Sunday March 19, on the anniversary of the birth of Pepe Sánchez, in the Santa Ifigenia cemetery.
