The Supreme Court of Preparatory Investigation, presided over by Judge Juan Carlos Checkley Soriarevised –in public court— the preliminary question presented by the defense of the former president Pedro Castillo Terrones to annul the resolutions of Congress that They declared the presidential vacancy and lifted the political impeachment as a consequence of the coup attempt of last December 7, 2022.

Defense of the ex-president indicates that none of the provisions issued by the Congress of the Republic followed the process of the political preliminary trial provided for in articles 99 and 100 of the Political Constitution of Peru. Meanwhile, it would have violated constitutional rights of former head of state.
Eduardo Pachas resumes his defense
The day also marked the return of Eduardo Pachas as lawyer of Pedro Castillo, being the tenth lawyer who assumes his defense since he left the presidency of the Republic.
Although there was no public resignation, Eduardo Pachas withdrew from the former president’s defense after the attempted coup on December 7. Despite not having publicly resigned, he did distance himself from the former president, for a time Pedro Castillo had to be defended by a public defender before the request for preventive detention against him.
Finally, Pedro Castillo spoke during the hearing to denounce the violation of your constitutional rights: “My right to defense and evidence was violated by this Congress of the Republic. And he said, Mr. Judge, why would you have to leave the country? Where is the proof that I want to date? I have not raped, robbed, or killed anyone. I never had the idea of leaving this country.”
