PC supports charter reform bill

The Citizen Participation Civic Movement (PC) supported this morning the project that the Executive Power will submit to Congress at the beginning of May, with the purpose of reforming the Constitution of the Republic.

Joseph Manuel Abreu, general coordinator of the entity, maintained that they support the reform proposed by President Luis Abinader because, among other aspects, it seeks a new method for choosing the Public Ministry, which would give it greater economic and decision-making independence.

“The position of Citizen participation It is in accordance with this reform that is being proposed, especially the one that seeks to change the method of selection of the Public Ministry, mainly of the prosecutor who would no longer be in the hands of the Executive Power, this increases its independence from this body, which already has a certain degree of independence as expressed by the political parties and their representatives”, he stated.

He added that “the Public Ministry already has budgetary and administrative independence, but to configure and strengthen it requires independence in its form of election so that we can have a Prosecutor’s Office that has already strengthened that part of independence in action, that does not have that fear of be removed at any time according to the will of the President.” Abreu said that they agree with the actions they can take to strengthen the country’s legal system and institutions.

He reported that they support the approval of the Domain Extinction Law because it will strengthen the fight against corruption in the Dominican Republic, drug trafficking and money laundering, among others.

“We are also with the modifications that are sought in the electoral laws and that they be given priority for this year, because next year is pre-electoral, and those laws must already be defined so that the actors act and organize based on them. ”, informed the civic leader.

Abreu stressed that they agree with the decision of the JCE to directly submit to Congress modifications to Laws 33-18 of Political Parties and 15-18 Organic of the Electoral Regime, despite the fact that they are discussed in the Economic and Social Council (CES). ).
