The Hospital de Clínicas recalled that it offers comprehensive management of obese patients, through a multidisciplinary team that cares for obese patients from all areas, with specialists in endocrinology, bariatric surgeon, nutritionists, psychologists, psychiatrists and other specialists involved in the process . The idea is that people who need to lose weight and who meet the criteria for bariatric surgery enter the treatment.
“The patient with obesity has many edges to treat, considering that it is a multifactorial chronic disease and requires long-term follow-up. ANDhe obese patient must be treated chronically and in this sense, the Obesity Unit was created. Obesity has treatment”, highlighted Dr. Sussam Benítez, a specialist in the Obesity Unit.
He indicated that they receive the patient with Obesity from grade II and above, with a body mass index of 35 or more, contemplating above all, cases of obesity grade II, grade III, morbid and super obesity, These are the patients who require more attention. It is evaluated with the weight and height of the patient, the calculation is made that yields a number, which would be more than 35 BMI, so that he can enter the Obesity Unit.
“Today we have more tools to treat obesity, especially in the sense of new drugs, approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the Food and Drug Administration of the United States (FDA, for its acronym in English, for long-term use in obesity and that have promising results. The medication must be prescribed by the treating physician, since each patient is individualized and according to their clinical characteristics.”
Medication is intended to help the patient acquire healthy habits. both in diet and change in lifestyle by performing physical activities, so that it maintains the weight lost over time.

Bariatric Surgery
For his part, Prof. Dr. Agustín Rodríguez, surgeon and specialist at the Obesity Unit, mentioned that between candidates for bariatric surgery are the obese person with grade III and BMI of 40 or more, the obese person grade II that is accompanied by a metabolic disease and this in relation to obesity. After surgery, the patient must continue treatment through the multidisciplinary team offered by the Obesity Unit. Two types of techniques are offered, according to each patient, be it the gastric sleeve or the gastric bypass.

The Obesity Unit in consultations of all the specialties it covers, attends an average of 300 patients on a monthly basis.
