Paraguay closes intermediate agreement on tariffs

Binational Itaipu authorities announced the definition of the budget bases corresponding to the 2022 financial year and, consequently, the rate for the provision of electricity service to the purchasing entities ANDE (National Electricity Administration) and ENBPar (Brazilian Nuclear Energy Participation Company). and Binational), after the 1,138th extraordinary meeting of the Executive Board and the 316th extraordinary meeting of the Board of Directors held this Tuesday, August 9, at the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant.

The Unit Cost of the Itaipu Electricity Service for the year 2022 was established at US$ 20.75 per kilowatt/month, thus achieving an intermediate value with respect to the proposals initially proposed by both sides of the Binational. What was proposed by Paraguay was to maintain the US$22.60 per kilowatt/month, while Brazil proposed the reduction to US$18.95 per kilowatt/month. These numbers will only be valid during 2022.

This consensus came after a process of analysis of the proposals on the budget for this year in the areas of the Executive Board and the Board of Directors, within the framework of cooperation and permanent dialogue that governs the relationship between the two countries that own the hydroelectric venture.

The agreed value will allow estimated income of US$ 220 million for each country. Regarding Paraguay, some US$140 million dollars will be allocated to the strengthening and modernization of the national electrical system, through ANDE, to strengthen the process towards energy sovereignty.

Similarly, some US$ 80 million will be made available for the continuity of high-impact projects for the country, which are part of the entity’s socio-environmental responsibility investments, such as the construction of international bridges, Health Units of the Family (USF) in all departments, university scholarships, support programs for family farming, environmental actions, among others. In addition, the income that is remitted monthly to both countries as royalties, profits and compensation stipulated in Annex C of the Treaty and their respective Reversal Notes is guaranteed.
