Panorama in Santander: strong frost in some municipalities, severe drought in one of its rivers

On the one hand, 5,000 onion producers are affected by the frost in the municipality of Vetas, while the Sogamoso river is experiencing a drought that has caused the death of several fish in Santander.

The panorama in the department of Santander and Norte de Santander has not been very encouraging in the last days of 2022 and they begin the new year in the midst of environmental crises in some areas.

On the one hand, the municipalities of Tona, Vetas, Silos and Santa Bárbara are facing a severe frost.

This has meant that close to 1,000 hectares of onion and potato crops have been lost to the peasants, since everything has been frozen.

“The temperatures below zero have us down right now at night, from six in the afternoon ice is already falling,” said a farmer from the area.

Another of the sectors affected by the frost has been tourism, in addition, several areas of cabins have damage to their pipes.

According to the Risk Management office, the frost season began earlier than expected, since it usually occurs from January.

What happened to the Sogamoso river?

In the rural area of ​​Betulia, Santander, where the Sogamoso River is located; fishing area, there is a severe drought that has caused the death of fish such as Bocachico, Chocas, Burritos, among other species in the area.

«This is a trauma for us as fishermen and inhabitants; one no longer has confidence in the company because it never responds for the damages,” said Cecilia Mantilla, a fisherman from Betulia.

The fishermen assure that the Isagen hydroelectric plant closed the floodgates, causing the river flow to drop significantly.

The Sogamoso River went from 500 cubic meters per second to 80 cubic meters.

For its part, the company reported that the decrease in the flow of the Sogamoso River is due to the summer season.

Well, to date, they have been complying with the guidelines of the environmental license granted.

Given this, the national government announced that they are going to review the environmental licenses of the country’s power plants due to the tragedy of the Sogamoso River.
